VERSACE AND SASSY

OWNER’S MEMORIES

Versace (the cat) and Sassy (the dog) were both rescues.   Versace was rescued from a humane society and was to be kept at my daughter’s apartment.   However, after a short time, he was soon evicted and came to live with us.   Sassy came later after the company my daughter was working for had an elderly woman reach out that she had a 6 month old miniature dachshund that needed to be re-homed otherwise, was going to have to go to a shelter.    The story was, the woman was afraid she was going to hurt the little dog.   In reality, I believe that is not the truth.   Sassy is well……sassy.   She’s a naughty little dog but I love her to pieces!  Somehow along the way, Versace and Sassy became very good friends.   I really think Versace thought he was a dog too.    He would stand at the door when the dogs had to go outside, go with them, do his business and usually come back inside with them.   Some days he would stay outside longer or even overnight.   He loved to knock bats out of the night sky and was very good at it!   I believe he was abused as a kitten.   After we adopted him we found he had a leg that had been broken but never fixed.    Once he came to live with us, he became royalty, and loved to be told how fabulous he was!   When Sassy would hurt her back, Versace would lay with her on the blanket and put his paw around her, letting her know she would be fine.   One night, a couple of years ago, we heard a loud disturbance in the house.    Versace started having terrible seizures.    We took him to the vet and it was agreed that the best thing for him would be to help him cross the rainbow bridge.   Sassy has been lost the last couple of years without her friend.   A couple of months ago, we adopted a couple of kittens and one of them (Dobby) is quite possibly a reincarnation of Versace.    The two are building a strong friendship and some days when the kitten is chasing the dog through the house, I swear I see Versace.   He will forever be missed, but will always be carried in our hearts.
